Music for unaccompanied Violoncello It is remarkable that an extensive repertoire has been created for the violoncello, La Belle Dame Sans Merci, or, as an enthusiastic amateur once put it, the unplayable instrument. From the 17th Century until the present day, composers have built up an extensive oeuvre both for solo violoncello and for combinations with piano, orchestra, or other stringed instruments, an uvre whose dimensions are exceeded only by that for the violin.
