I must have been about 15 years old when I heard the Sacre for the first time: in Walt Disneys animated film Fantasia. It was only when I saw the film again a short time ago that I realized how much violence had been done to Stravinskys score by Walt Disney and conductor Leopold Stokowsky: they had made enormous cuts, altered the sequence of the sections, and even made changes in the instrumentation! This does not detract from the fact that at the time I was overwhelmed by the music and the moving pictures, the latter briefly sketching the creation of the earth and creatures on it….
