About this album

Two Channel Classics artists violist Dana Zemtsov and pianist Anna Fedorova joined forces when they discovered they have a mutual friend.

‘Do you know that feeling when coming to a new place as if the atmosphere you are in has been with you forever, recognizing it like an old friend?
Our upbringing was similar and filled with Guy de Maupassant, Gustave Flaubert, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Jean de La Fontaine, Pierre Richard, Louis de Funès, Georges Brassens, Édith Piaf, Charles Trenet. This could be a logical explanation for us both experiencing this sense of familiarity every time we cross the border to France. Or maybe we have lived some of our previous lives in these surroundings that they seem so close to us?
This is by no means a story about France. Each piece in this album has its own story, its own thoughts, and feelings. However, throughout it, if you listen with your eyes closed, you will occasionally sense the presence of a furtive silhouette ‘à la Française’.

Reviews

Audiophile Audition

(…) Zemtsov packs a throaty, rich and rasping tone to counter the sensuous chords from Federova. (…)

Classical WETA - Album of the Week

This week’s featured album has a distinctly French flair. (…) A French sunrise sounds like a great way to ease into a hot July day!

Opus Klassiek

(...) Een fraaie cohesie tussen klavier en altviool. Sprankelend in hoogte en majestueus in laagte, in helder uitgekristalliseerd spel. ENGLISH: What do you get when you ask two super talents to record an album? Yes indeed, a super CD! (...) If you listen to Silhouettes, you hardly notice that it is so incredibly beautiful how Anna Fedorova and Dana Zemtsov perform the music. (…) If you listen to Silhouettes, you hardly notice that it is so incredibly beautiful how Anna Fedorova and Dana Zemtsov perform the music. It sounds so organic and natural. (…)

Gramophone - Podcast: The Listening Room

Rebecca Clarke's Viola Sonata, a work that has been recorded many times, receives a fine new performance by Dana Zemtsov and Anna Fedorova on an imaginatively conceived album from Channel Classics. If you don't know the sonata, do listen – it's a gem!
