About this album

The six Trio Sonatas for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) “are written in such galantstyle that they still sound very good, and never grow old, but on the contrary will outliveall revolutions of fashion in music.” Attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, this quote from A Comparison in 1788 of his father’s and Handel’s music continues to resonate with us today.Arrangements of these splendid works abound, and provide an opportunity to extract these jewelsfor the purpose of performing more of Bach’s music with chamber ensemble forces. The genre of the trio sonata was one of the most popular in the baroque era, yet Bach and evenHandel yielded very few works of this type during their careers. Although the terminology Sonata atre, Sonate en trio or Sonata of 3 Parts would suggest a total of three voices, the title in fact refers to thenumber of parts in the composition.

International Record Review

The standard of playing throughtout the disc is uniformly excellent. (...) any release of this superb ensemble is worthy of notice and this disc, though provocative and contentious in some ways, is no exception. (...) the arrangements and performances have evidently been carefully thought out and the quality of execution makes this disc highly recommendable.

Audiophile Audition

Florilegium plays with abandon and enthusiasm, just as I have come to expect based on their other albums, each of which is a jewel. Channel channels great surround sound to this band, making the aural experience a pure pleasure in and of itself. Good stuff here.

The Sunday Times

Indeed it is a measure of Florilegium’s success that anyone who does not know the organ originals would hardly guess that these trios were not conceived for flute, strings and lute or harpsichord continuo. (...) This entrancing disc is a team effort, unreservedly recommended. - CD OF THE WEEK

Nederlands Dagblad

(...) On comprend vite que Florilegium excelle (...)

these are some of the most captivating performances of Bach I have ever encountered ... every fast movement dances with elegance and vitality; every slow movement is infused with lyricism and a sweet, soulful gravity ... Splurge here, and you won't regret it!

Classics Today

Florilegium has gone for maximum color and contrast in arranging each sonata for different forces. (...) The playing is consistently fine, especially by violinist Rodolfo Richter (...) The gorgeous SACD sonics capture the ensemble’s timbral variety perfectly, and many listeners will welcome the opportunity to hear some of Bach’s best instrumental music in these new, impressively idiomatic arrangements.
