The soprano Barbara Hannigan is an artistwho combines thrilling passion with exceptionaltechnique. A frequent guest of the BerlinPhilharmonic, she has also performed withmost of the other leading orchestras andensembles worldwide, and with such conductorsas Pierre Boulez, Reinbert de Leeuw,Vladimir Jurowski, Esa-Pekka Salonen, AlanGilbert, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Pablo Heras-Casado and Susanna Mälkki. She made herown conducting debut at the Théâtre duChâtelet in Paris, with Stravinsky’s Renard.Under the baton of Simon Rattle, she has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, BRSOMunich, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.She has given the world premiere of over 80works, most recently George Benjamin’sWritten on Skin at the Aix-en-ProvenceFestival in July 2012. Other major works includeLigeti’s Le Grand Macabre (Gepopo andVenus), Händel’s Rinaldo (Armida) andMozart’s Cosi fan tutte (Fiordiligi). Her appearancesin Sasha Waltz’s productions of theoperas Passion and Matsukaze, requiring physicalas well as vocal agility and expressivepotency, made an extraordinary impression.Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre, a tour deforce for soprano and orchestra, has becomea signature work, which she has sung – andsometimes also conducted – at LincolnCenter, the Berlin Philharmonie, Théâtre duChâtelet, Salzburger Festspiele, Los Angeles’Disney Hall, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw,and the Wiener Konzerthaus.at chamber music festivals like the KuhmoChamber Music Festival (Finland) and theGubbio Festival (Italy).
